China's Chang'e 7 moon probe will launch this weekend

Happy Friday, space fans!

We made it to the end of yet another week. But space never stops, and over the weekend, China plans to launch its historic Chang'e 7 moon mission. This will send a lander, rover, hopper and a ton of science experiments to the moon's south pole. This is a seriously major trip to the moon! Millions of miles away from all of this lunar fun, ESA's Mars Express orbiter has captured some incredible footage of the planet from above, creating a stunning flyover that allows you to feel like you're flying right over the Martian surface. And scientists are once again looking at a new possibility to explain dark matter, and new researchers suggest that it could be something they're calling "dark photons".

Check out what's big in space below:

New research suggests that if dark matter is composed of "dark photons," it would not have heated the early cosmos like scientists thought.

That's it for our space update today!

While we're excited to see continued progress with NASA's Artemis program, they aren't the only ones going to the moon. While uncrewed, China's upcoming Chang'e 7 mission will send a seriously impressive amount of gear to the lunar south pole. A lander, rover, hopper, orbiter and a whole litany of science experiments? It will be interesting to see how all of this gear gets used on the moon and how China's moon operations push forward as NASA gears up for Artemis III.

Chang'e 7 launches on Sunday, Aug. 23 (or Aug. 24 Beijing time) and less than one week later, we will see NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon heavy rocket on Aug. 30 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This flagship mission will send a brand new and incredibly capable space telescope out into the cosmos to help us broaden our understanding. Space.com staff will be reporting live from this launch, and we can't wait to take you along with us. To follow closely along and stay up to date with all things space, you can now get Space.com right in the palm of your hand with our new app available now on iOS and Android.
