We're about to exceed 1.5-degree global warming limit
Space.com
Happy Thursday, space fans.

But maybe not that happy. In disheartening news, the UN has declared that we are on track to pass the 1.5 C threshold set during the Paris Climate Agreement. In 2015, nearly 200 nations around the world pledged to fight against climate change and work to try and keep average global temperature rise below 2 C above pre-industrial levels, and ideally below 1.5 C. This news shows that we are heading in the wrong direction, but it's also not a doomsday report as not only is there still a path forward in fixing things, but in this report the UN outlines how we can get back on track. In stranger news, today you can watch SpaceX launch a mission. But it's not a regular Starlink satellite mission, as this flight will send to space a classified mission for the U.S. Space Force. And there's always a bit of fun to be found, and this week we got a birds-eye view of an iconic Star Trek filming location when a NASA satellite shared its view of Vasquez Rocks in California where the iconic fight scene between Captain Kirk and the Gorn was filmed.

Check out what's big in space below:

That's it for our space update today!

Did you watch today's top-secret classified Space Force mission launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket? It's interesting how we can watch it launch to space but we don't know what is launching or even where in space it might be going. From space reality to science fiction, we are still celebrating Star Trek's 60th anniversary. From astronauts aboard the International Space Station to satellite views of iconic filming locations, we are all Trek right now and I hope that if that's your thing that you're celebrating along with us!

Unfortunately, for the time being, we will continue to get climate news that feels like doom and gloom. But it's not too late to turn this ship around so, while we might continue to see bad news about our warming planet, don't forget that there is still so much opportunity for us to improve things for life on this planet of ours. Speaking of our planet, in just over a week we will be celebrating International Observe the Moon Night, one of Space.com's favorite holidays that reminds us that it's always a great time to look up and admire our natural satellite. To follow closely along and stay up to date with all things space, you can now get Space.com right in the palm of your hand with our new app available now on iOS and Android.
