Supermassive black holes 'kill' their host galaxies

Happy Friday, space fans

And once again, we have made it to the end of another week. And it's now October! A whole new month of sights to see in the night sky. Ending the week with a nice mix of weird science and spaceflight news, we are starting off with a new study in which scientists have discovered how supermassive black holes can actually "kill" their host galaxies with powerful plasma jets. Over in spaceflight, SpaceX has launched a top-secret spy mission for the U.S. with its ultra-powerful Falcon Heavy rocket. This was the third SpaceX launch in less than 13 hours, making for a remarkable streak for the company. And a mission that isn't ready to launch yet but is getting people excited, NASA has announced that it's moving forward with the PRIMA mission, an astrophysics mission that will look into the far-infrared.

Check out what's big in space below:

And that's it for our space update today!

I hope that you have a great weekend ahead of you, but if you're not sure how to spend your Saturday and Sunday, you can always spend some time with us learning about space or looking up at the night sky. This past week, we saw SpaceX launch Starship to orbit for the first time and we saw NASA launch the Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station successfully, two major milestones forward in human spaceflight. We will continue to let you know how the crew aboard the station is doing and how Starship continues to progress as we get closer and closer to NASA's Artemis 3 mission which aims to rendezvous with Starship (as well as Blue Origin's Blue Moon).

Now that we are in October, we are just few days away from World Space Week which begins this upcoming Monday! This will be a great opportunity to explore the cutting edge of spaceflight and space science as we look to the future of what's possible on the final frontier. To follow closely along and stay up to date with all things space, you can now get Space.com right in the palm of your hand with our new app available now on iOS and Android.
