Hang on tight as you watch this new footage of Jupiter.

This sped-up view shows the perspective of NASA's Juno spacecraft as it flew just 2,050 miles (3,300 kilometers) above the gas giant's cloud tops on April 9. This was Juno's 41st flyby above the radiation-spewing planet, during which the spacecraft soared at a top speed of 131,000 mph (210,000 km/h) relative to Jupiter.

"Citizen scientist Andrea Luck created this animated sequence using raw JunoCam image data," NASA officials wrote this week.

Monster black holes may have murdered their host galaxies in the early universe
(Pixabay)
While there is plenty of indirect evidence that feedback from black holes can suppress star formation, astronomers are still awaiting conclusive observations of this process occurring and are working to understand how it happens.

Now, a research team has shown that galaxies in the early universe that have stopped forming stars possess central black holes that are more active than those in galaxies that are still forming stars.

Perseverance Mars rover can pick its own laser targets now
Without explicit direction from Earth, the Perseverance rover zapped two rock targets with its SuperCam instrument on Sol 442 (May 18) to learn more about their elemental compositions, mission scientists said in an update Tuesday about the Mars mission.

"Normally, when the rover team picks the targets, the observations are not made until the following day," Roger Wiens, principal investigator of SuperCam and a planetary scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, said in a statement(opens in new tab). "If Perseverance picks its own targets, it can shoot them right after a drive.
