Coming Soon  On June 30, 1908, the largest asteroid impact in recorded history struck Tunguska, Siberia. The collision released about 185 times as much energy as an atomic bomb, flattening about 2,000 square miles of forest. If the space rock had hit a more densely populated area, the event would have been devastating. That’s why, every June 30, we celebrate Asteroid Day. It’s an opportunity for scientists and citizens to raise awareness about the potential danger of asteroid impacts and rally support for efforts to defend Earth.  Science News for Students has you covered on the basics of space rocks, with explainers on asteroids and the difference between asteroids, meteors and meteorites.
