Women make up only a small fraction of the world’s engineers, but that number is on the rise. To celebrate the work of female engineers around the globe and encourage more girls to put the “E” in STEM, the United Nations recognizes International Women in Engineering Day on June 23. Explore the event website to find resources, sign up for webinars and more.

This year’s theme is “Inventors and Innovators” — offering the perfect opportunity to dive into Science News for Students’ Invention & Innovation collection. Recent stories highlight the work of female engineers, such as a biomedical engineer developing wearable tech to warn people when they’re about to get sick . There’s also a mechanical engineer working to build synthetic trees that draw up groundwater for drinking.
