Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a national holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This day isn’t just an opportunity to celebrate African American freedom but also education and achievement. So this Juneteenth, let’s learn more about some of the many pioneering Black researchers who have shaped the history of science.

Check out National Geographic’s roster of African American trailblazers in STEM, from agricultural scientist George Washington Carver to the first Black woman in space, astronaut Mae Jemison. Science Buddies’ list of African American gamechangers in STEM includes both short profiles and suggested science activities related to each researcher’s field of work.

Society for Science’s annual High School Research Teachers Conference brings 200 high-school teachers to Washington, D.C., all expenses paid, for a weekend of peer-led professional development. This year, it will take place September 29–October 1. The lottery to attend the 2023 conference is now open and will close August 5.
