NASA launches Artemis 1 moon rocket at last!

NASA's new era of deep space exploration has begun.

With a mighty roar, the most powerful NASA rocket ever built — the Space Launch System (SLS) — soared into the Florida early morning sky on the Artemis 1 mission, a risky and long-delayed test flight to send a next-generation space capsule to the moon and back.

Satellite sees Artemis 1 rocket launch in Earth's atmosphere

That's one speedy streaker caught flying to space. A weather satellite captured NASA's Artemis 1 mission in the moments after it lifted off for the moon today. Although the launch blasted off a pad in Florida at 1:47 a.m. EST (0647 GMT) in total darkness, the water plume of the Space Launch System was visible in the view of the GOES East satellite.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, the moon will appear half illuminated in the evening sky as it moves into its final quarter — also called the third quarter phase. The final quarter moon will rise during the middle of the night and will be prominent in the sky before the dawn hours.

Water-hunting moon cubesat to launch with SpaceX

NASA is going all in on the moon, and an upcoming mission called Lunar Flashlight will add lasers to the party. The small satellite, roughly the size of a briefcase, will skim the moon's surface and use lasers to peer into lunar craters, searching for water ice in places we haven't been able to explore yet.
