In Test Tubes, RNA Molecules Evolve Into a Tiny Ecosystem

By YASEMIN SAPLAKOGLU

When researchers gave a genetic molecule the ability to replicate, it evolved over time into a complex network of "hosts" and "parasites" that both competed and cooperated to survive.

QUANTUM PHYSICS

Physicists Pin Down How Quantum Uncertainty Sharpens Measurements

By BEN BRUBAKER

Throwing out data seems to make measurements of distances and angles more precise. The reason why has been traced to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

THE JOY OF WHY

Where Do Space, Time and Gravity Come From?

Podcast hosted by STEVEN STROGATZ

Einstein's description of curved space-time doesn't easily mesh with a universe made up of quantum wavefunctions. Theoretical physicist Sean Carroll discusses the quest for quantum gravity with host Steven Strogatz.

Beaming With Excitement
A long-awaited accelerator came online this week, reports Nature. The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will study rare, neutron-rich isotopes that are produced during events like neutron star collisions. Studying the nuclear physics of various isotopes can also help us learn about the Big Bang. In 2020 Thomas Lewton wrote for Quanta about how measuring the fusion rate of deuterium to helium-3 helped reveal key details about the first moments of the universe.

Monkey Business
A new hybrid species of monkey was found in Borneo, reports Patrick Pester for Live Science. Unlike other hybrids that are sterile (like mules), these monkeys appear to be able to reproduce. Hybridization was long assumed to be an evolutionary dead-end. But in 2019 Jonathan Lambert reported for Quanta on a new study that suggested it could actually be a shortcut to speciation.
