Hubble telescope spots enormous galaxy with mysterious shells
The elliptical galaxy, known as NGC 474, is located approximately 100 million light-years from Earth.

The Hubble telescope captured an up-close view of the central region of the galaxy, revealing its enormous size. Measuring roughly 250,000 light-years across, NGC 474 is 2.5 times larger than our own galaxy, the Milky Way. But the size of NGC 474 is not its only unique feature. It's also surrounded by strange wispy shells.

Arizona senator and former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly said he and his wife are heartbroken by a tragic school shooting in Texas.

Go inside Boeing's Starliner capsule with station astronauts (video tour)
(NASA TV)
The crew aboard the space station gave a video tour of the Starliner capsule while it was docked to the orbiting lab, offering viewers the chance to see inside the spacecraft, explore its equipment and meet Boeing's test dummy Rosie the Rocketeer, named after Rosie the Riveter of World War II-era fame. She was joined by a plush toy named Jebediah "Jeb" Kerman — a Kerbonaut from the hit space exploration game Kerbal Space Program — which Boeing used as a zero-g indicator to show when the capsule reached space.

'Sharkcano' view from space shows an undersea volcano erupting
(NASA Earth Observator)
Superheated, acidic water surrounds an underwater volcano dubbed "sharkcano" in fresh imagery from the Landsat 9 satellite.

Discolored water is visible from space in the zone around Kavachi Volcano in the Solomon Islands, a Pacific island nation east of Papua New Guinea, in an image recently featured on NASA's Earth Observatory website.

(NASA)
The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is likely to be more active than average for the seventh year in a row, according to the latest prediction from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

There is a 70% chance that the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which starts on June 1 and ends Nov. 30, will bring 14 to 21 named storms, or storms with winds of 39 mph (63 km/h) or higher; six to 10 hurricanes with winds of 74 mph (119 km/h) or greater; and three to six major hurricanes, with winds of 111 mph (179 km/h), according to NOAA.

Greenhouse gas monitoring from space to get a boost with SpaceX launch
(Florian Gaertner/Getty Images)
Three greenhouse gas-detecting satellites traveled to space on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket today to improve emissions monitoring from space.

The satellites belong to Canada-based GHGSat, which currently runs the world's largest greenhouse gas-monitoring satellite constellations. The new additions will double the company's fleet, enabling it to spot polluters more quickly and accurately. GHGSat detects methane, a greenhouse gas that is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

HP Reverb G2 review
(Future)
There is a lot to like about the HP Reverb G2. It almost feels like it's flown under the radar in the VR gaming space, and we think that's a shame because it blows comparably priced competition out of the water. It's got a great display, comfortable controllers, and offers good value for money. It suffers from being king of the middle ground though.

Potential new meteor shower is 'all or nothing event,' NASA says
(Vcg/Getty Images)
A blast of new meteors may emerge during a tau Herculid meteor shower on May 30 and 31, but that's not a sure thing.

NASA astronomer Bill Cooke termed the potential milestone an "all or nothing event" in a blog post from the agency earlier in May, as astronomers track the debris from the broken-up comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (also known as SW 3).

Debris from the most spectacular comet outburst ever could thrill skywatchers in August
(Finnish Geospatial Research Institute)
Dust particles produced by the largest comet outburst ever detected will be visible even to amateur ground-based telescopes this summer, a study found.

In October 2007, an underwhelming comet known as 17P/Holmes suddenly brightened by a factor of 1 million. It became so bright that for a period of time it was observable even by the naked eye, the most significant such brightening ever recorded. The comet's coma, its glowing tail, spread so large in the wake of the outburst that for a few weeks, the comet became the largest apparent object in the entire solar system.

For the first time in a very long time it seems, fans of "Star Trek" are actually agreeing on something and that is how good "Strange New Worlds" is.

And while we're only three episodes into the new Paramount Plus(opens in new tab) series (and making our way through lots of new backstories), there's no denying that this incarnation of "Star Trek" looks utterly gorgeous.
