Inside Science News for Students  Over the years, many teachers have told us that they have native Spanish speakers in their classrooms who have trouble following our stories. Those teachers requested we include some stories in Spanish. And we listened. For a trial package, posted last week, we translated a trio of stories from our website into Spanish. These translated stories cover a range of scientific disciplines.  To do this, we hired a renowned native Spanish-speaking science journalist to translate our original stories and classroom-discussion questions. A native Spanish-speaking science editor (and scientist) gave them a consistent style. All stories still include Power Words (those glossary terms at the bottom), now in Spanish. And the stories’ readability levels remain in the same range as the originals. One piece focuses on animals: La nutria soporta el frío, sin un cuerpo grande ni capa de grasa. It pairs with Here’s how sea otters stay warm without blubber or a large body. For those who want to read about climate, we have Nuevo informe de la ONU sobre el clima: no hay tiempo que perder. It pairs with New UN climate report finds no time for denial or delay. And for kids who are intrigued by Earth science, we have El volcán de Santorini erupciona más cuando baja el nivel del mar. Its English counterpart: Greece’s Santorini volcano erupts more when the sea level drops. In each case, students can toggle back and forth on the website between the English and Spanish versions. The real measure of their value, however, will be in how they work for your students. So we ask educators, in particular, to fill out this brief survey.
