However, the overuse and misuse of these precious drugs has led to the rise of drug-resistant “superbugs” which pose a great threat to human health. Without urgent action, some routine medical procedures and operations will become dangerous, many common infections will become untreatable, and millions of lives will be lost. Medical Research Foundation PhD students, learning about how human waste drives antimicrobial resistance in our rivers and coastal environments.  Thanks to gifts in Wills, the Medical Research Foundation is funding the UK’s only national PhD training programme in antimicrobial resistance, which is training the next generation of researchers to tackle this urgent global health challenge.
