Inside Science News for Students Creative scientists and engineers around the world are bringing some pretty wild ideas to life. Some have recently focused on tackling the pandemic, creating new materials to improve COVID-19 tests and masks. Other inventors are trying to solve environmental crises by making air travel less polluting and plastics more biodegradable. Still other new inventions sound like something straight out of science fiction. ( 3-D printed meat, anyone?) Students can read all about these and other cutting-edge creations in Science News for Students ’ “Invention & Innovation” series.  News stories in this series, made possible with generous support from the Lemelson Foundation, don’t just show off new gadgets and gizmos. Articles take students through the process of invention: Where did an inventor get her inspiration? What obstacles has she overcome? What ideas does she have to improve her current prototype?  The 18 “Invention and Innovation” stories published each year are compiled into a print book. Historically, this book has been distributed solely to students who enter science-fair events sponsored by Society for Science. But a free PDF version of the 2020 book, which contains stories published in 2019, is available online. And this year’s free compilation of 2020 stories — plus related explainers, sidebars and puzzles — can be read and downloaded here.
