100th woman in space talks inspiring the next generation
(Blue Origin)
For Emily Calandrelli, known to many as "The Space Gal," the dream of spaceflight began over 20 years ago. Last year, that dream became a reality. As the 100th woman to travel to space, Calandrelli isn't just celebrating personal achievement -- she's using her journey to inspire others, uplift underrepresented communities and push the boundaries of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) accessibility.

Asteroid passing between Earth and moon today
(NASA/JPL)
A newly discovered house-size asteroid is set to make a close, yet harmless approach to Earth today (May 21), passing within one-third of the Earth-moon distance. The close approach will happen at approximately 1:30 p.m. ET on May 21 (1730 GMT), at which point the asteroid, designated 2025 KF, will pass a mere 71,700 miles (115,000 kilometers) from Earth, according to NASA.

Are we ready for the worst space weather? 'We don't know'
(NASA GSFC/Michael Benson via Getty Images)
Imagine being told a storm is heading your way, but you won't know how bad the winds are or whether they'll knock out power until just minutes before it hits. That's the challenge scientists face when it comes to predicting solar storms. We've come a long way in understanding space weather. We can spot solar storm eruptions, track their speed, and estimate when they'll arrive at Earth, sometimes with up to a day's warning. However, one critical piece of information remains frustratingly out of reach until the last moment: the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, known as the Bz component.

Early universe 'zippers' and 'twisters' may solve mystery
(NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI)
Structures known as "zippers" and "twisters" in the early universe may explain why dwarf galaxies tend to line up with each other, as well as hint at how dark matter operates in the universe. Every major galaxy like the Milky Way has a retinue of smaller dwarf galaxies orbiting it. The Milky Way has several dozen, including the famous Large and Small Magellanic clouds. Beginning in the 1970s, astronomers noticed that these dwarf galaxies' positions and orbits weren't entirely random. Instead, dwarf galaxies tended to exist within the same plane. For example, the 11 brightest satellites of the Milky Way share a plane, and many dwarf galaxies around the Andromeda galaxy form what is known as the Great Plane of Andromeda.

NASA's X-59 jet takes 'flight' without leaving the ground
(Lockheed Martin/Garry Tice)
During the testing, engineers turned on most of the aircraft's systems but left the engine off. The flight computer still had control over the X-59's control surfaces, responding to inputs that simulated changes in altitude, speed, temperature or the health of its various systems.
