NASA STEM Engagement

NASA Day of Remembrance

Today, NASA pauses to remember those who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery.

On this NASA Day of Remembrance, NASA's Office of STEM Engagement honors the legacy of teacher-turned-astronaut Christa McAuliffe by sharing her Challenger lost lessons.

Virtual Learning Opportunities

GLOBE Mission Mosquito Webinar: GLOBE Chronicles of Change

Audience: Formal and informal educators, parents, and caregivers

Webinar Date:

Thursday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. EST

Contact: cassie_soeffing@strategies.org

Join the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program’s Mission Mosquito team for a hands-on webinar that introduces participants to different data sources that can enrich GLOBE data collected locally. The GLOBE Chronicles of Change template can be used to describe environmental and other changes that have taken place in your community. You will use demographic data, satellite imagery, and other resources to create hypotheses about Earth system change in your community and identify GLOBE protocols that can be applied to test your hypotheses.

Educators will leave the webinar with a template they can use to reproduce this activity with their learners. Click here to register.

Higher Education Opportunities

2025 NASA Student Airborne Research Program

Audience: Undergraduate students currently in their junior year

Application Deadline:

Friday, Jan. 31

Contact: stephanie.olaya@nasa.gov

The NASA Student Airborne Research Program is an eight-week summer internship for rising senior undergraduate students interested in Earth system science. The program provides hands-on research experience in all aspects of a scientific campaign, including flying onboard a research aircraft and engaging with ground observations and satellite data. Participants will work in one of four interdisciplinary teams to study land, atmospheric, or oceanographic processes. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Participants receive a stipend, and travel/living expenses are covered.

University Nanosatellite Program Mission Concept 2025 Summer Series

Audience: U.S. colleges and universities

Informational Webinar:

Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. EST

Proposal Deadline:

Monday, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m. EST

Contact: info@universitynanosat.org

NASA is collaborating with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force to offer a set of hands-on learning engagements that will help higher education institutions, faculty, and students learn more about what it takes to build small satellites and enhance the potential to be selected for flight opportunities.

Selected teams will receive systems engineering training that prepares them for the industrial workforce while developing small satellite expertise at U.S. universities. The program allows faculty and students to form teams for the summer program without using university resources, and includes travel funding for kickoff, final event, and any in-person reviews, among other benefits.

Europa Clipper ICONS Internship

Audience: Undergraduate STEM students at U.S. degree-granting institutions, including community colleges, with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Application Deadline: Feb. 28

Contact: HQ-EuropaICONS@mail.nasa.gov

The Inspiring Clipper: Opportunities for Next-generation Scientists (ICONS) internships bring members of the Europa Clipper science team together with undergraduate students for a 10-week internship that gives students the opportunity to conduct original scientific research. Internships may be in-person at the mentor's institution, virtual, or hybrid, depending on the research project and needs of the mentor and intern. Near the end of the 10 weeks, students and mentors will convene for an in-person conference, with travel, lodging, and per diem covered by NASA. Interns will receive a $12,000 stipend for the duration of the program, and may be eligible for travel, housing, and relocation allowances, depending on the location of their research activities.

New STEM Activity: Air Traffic Management

Audience: Educators of grades 9-12

As delivery and emergency response drones and air taxis begin to crowd the air space around our airports and cities, the hazards and risks associated with heavier air traffic increase. This surge in aircraft over our cities will require new research tools, innovative technologies, and operational methods.

In this activity, students will use a programming language to create an interactive simulation of a drone navigating through a crowded airspace while delivering passengers or products to their destination. The simulation engages students in computational thinking, problem solving, and real-world application of mathematics.
