Coming Soon Celebrate Earth’s nearest celestial neighbor October 16 on International Observe the Moon Night. This NASA-sponsored event is held every autumn when the moon is around its first quarter phase. It’s an excellent time for viewing details of the lunar surface, such as the line between the dark and bright sides. People worldwide host gatherings on this day to learn about lunar science and exploration, make observations and honor cultural connections to the moon. Educators, parents and students can participate by hosting or attending in-person or virtual events. Connect with other moon enthusiasts by joining the event’s Facebook page and Flickr group and by following the #ObserveTheMoon hashtag on social media. NASA provides many hands-on activities for moon-themed events, including a coloring book about space rovers and activities that guide students through packing for a trip to the moon or picking a lunar-landing site. Of course, Science News for Students has a trove of moon-related content to check out as well. Let’s learn about the moon, from the Let’s Learn About collection, is your one-stop-shop for the latest lunar science. Read up on the moon’s frosting of water ice and its sway over animals on Earth .
