New STEMonstration: Gyroscopic Stabilization

From space telescopes aimed at distant cosmic objects to the International Space Station orienting its solar panels towards the Sun, gyroscopes help keep spacecraft pointed in the right direction. In the latest STEMonstration episode, NASA astronaut Nick Hague demonstrates how gyroscopes are used to counteract instability and keep spacecraft stable while flying.

Watch the video, then check out the corresponding career connection and hands-on activity to make your own model gyrostat and explore careers related to gyroscopic stability and NASA’s human space exploration missions.

Virtual Learning Opportunities

Webinar: 3D Thursdays for Rural Educators – NASA-Sponsored PLANETS Project

Event Date:

Thursday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. EST

Contact: Rachael.Arens@ops.org

Join NASA’s Science Mission Directorate for a monthly series that connects rural educators to resources, networking, and professional development opportunities.

This month’s webinar will feature Sean Ryan, a research associate and curriculum developer for the NASA-sponsored PLANETS (Planetary Learning that Advances the Nexus of Engineering, Technology, and Science) project, led by Northern Arizona University. Designed for out-of-school time, PLANETS gives learners in grades 3-8 the opportunity to do real planetary science and engineering. The project includes three units that are supported by comprehensive educator guides, videos, and resources.

Virtual Career Connection: How Sound Shapes Our World

Registration Deadline:

Tuesday, Dec. 2

Event Date:

Thursday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. EST

Contact: hq-virtual-engagements@mail.nasa.gov

Join us for a virtual event featuring one of the Career Technical Education (CTE) jobs at NASA helping to shape the future of transportation, technology, and exploration.

How does the X-59’s innovative sonic signature impact communities and environments? Hear from experts who research how the human brain perceives sound – a field called psychoacoustics – and study how aircraft noise impacts communities. Following the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the presenter’s career journey.

Dream With Us! Design Challenge

Agriculture plays an important role in providing food, fuel, and other resources for life. How can uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and advanced technologies improve the agricultural industry?

NASA Aeronautics and the Federal Aviation Administration are teaming up on the Dream With Us! design challenge to invite middle school and high school student teams to envision ways drones and technology can help.

Middle school teams will choose from topics in areas such as crop production, resilience, harvest, and other important areas. Teams of two to four students will build a presentation to showcase their design.

Deadline: Wednesday, Dec. 31

High school student teams will focus on creating a drone that can monitor plant health, detect pests, and collect samples. Teams of three to seven students will build an engineering design notebook supporting their proposal.

Deadline: Friday, Jan. 23, 2026

Winning teams in each division will get a chance to share their designs with NASA experts.
