Private Japanese ispace spacecraft crashes into the moon
(ispace)
A spacecraft from Japan attempting to make the country's first private moon landing on Thursday instead crashed into the lunar surface in a disappointing second failure for its ispace builders. The Japanese company's Resilience spacecraft aimed to make a soft touchdown in the Mare Frigoris ("Sea of Cold") region of the moon's near side today (June 5) at 3:17 p.m. EDT (1917 GMT; 4:17 a.m. on June 6 Japan Standard Time). But telemetry from the lander stopped one minute and 45 seconds before the scheduled touchdown, apparently due to an equipment malfunction.

Elon Musk exchanges barbs with President Trump online
(Brandon Bell/Getty Images)
Elon Musk is no longer seeing eye-to-eye with his former bestie in the White House. The SpaceX CEO exchange barbs with President Trump online yesterday (June 5), ultimately threatening, then rescinding a directive to decommission the Dragon spacecraft. It's hard to say when or how this spat will play out, but the current trajectory could point to a bleak outcome for American spaceflight.

Aurora alert: Incoming solar storm could spark auroras as far south as New York and Idaho this weekend
(Northwest Camera Works via Getty Images)
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from a solar filament eruption on June 3 is on its way to Earth and could give aurora chasers a treat. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) says Earth could receive a glancing blow from the CME by mid to late June 7 (UTC), while the UK Met Office places the arrival time slightly earlier, on Friday night (UTC). If the CME arrives, it's expected to stir up geomagnetic activity. Both NOAA SPWPC and the U.K. Met Office predict minor (G1) geomagnetic storm conditions but there's potential for isolated moderate (G2) storms if the CME combines with the ongoing high-speed solar wind from an Earth-facing coronal hole.

Marc Garneau, 1st Canadian astronaut, dies at 76
(NASA)
The first Canadian astronaut to fly into space has died at the age of 76. Marc Garneau, who made three flights on NASA's space shuttle missions, died on Wednesday (June 4), after what his family described as a short illness. "We are deeply grateful to Marc Garneau for his extraordinary public service, visionary leadership and enduring contributions to Canada and the world," said Lisa Campbell, president of the Canadian Space Agency, in a statement." Beyond his remarkable achievements, Marc was an exceptional human being: thoughtful, principled and deeply committed to serving others. His integrity and generosity of spirit touched everyone who had the privilege to work with him."

Astronomers discover largest explosions since Big Bang
(W. M. Keck Observatory/Adam Makarenko)
Astronomers have discovered the most powerful cosmic explosions since the Big Bang, naming them "extreme nuclear transients." These incredibly energetic explosions occur when stars with masses at least three times greater than that of the sun are torn apart by supermassive black holes. While such events have been witnessed before, astronomers say some of the ones recently discovered are powerful enough to be classified as a new phenomenon: extreme nuclear transients (ENTs).

Brand-new SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule delivered to pad
(SpaceX)
The Crew Dragon capsule that will fly SpaceX's next astronaut mission has arrived at the launch pad. That flight, called Ax-4, is scheduled to lift off atop a Falcon 9 rocket on June 10 from historic Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX just took a step toward meeting that timeline: It has delivered the Dragon to Pad 39A's hangar, the company announced via X on Thursday (June 5).

The 1st official 'Alien: Earth' trailer is finally here
(FX)
We won't have to wait much longer to sit down and watch Alien: Earth at home through FX/Hulu or Disney+. Now, very close to the two-month countdown, the sci-fi horror series' first-ever TV show, set before the original movie, has liberated an intriguing and exciting full trailer.

After countless teasers, plot descriptions, and many production images, fans were dying to get a proper look at Noah Hawley's (Legion, Fargo) new series. It's been a long wait, but this main trailer doesn't disappoint. First, we get to meet Wendy (Sydney Chandler), the first hybrid created by the Prodigy corporation, as its CEO seeks to blur the fine line between synthetics and humans. Then, things get bumpy at Prodigy City when a huge spaceship crash-lands right in the middle of it. Of course, Xenomorphs are aboard, but we weren't expecting four other "invasive species" to be causing trouble as well.
