The next full moon will occur at 2:26 p.m. EDT (1826 GMT) on Monday, Aug. 19. But it won't be just any old full moon, it will be a Supermoon Blue Moon! Rare sun auroras from '2-way highway' of charged particles,
(Sijie Yu)
Auroras on Earth occur when storms from our sun engulf our planet — and in a rare cosmic feat last April, our planet returned the favor. The "2-way highway" was created largely due to a plasma-rich component of the solar wind called a coronal mass ejection , which typically travels faster than the speed at which magnetic waves known as Alfvén waves move through plasma. That speed is known as the Alfvén speed.
