NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Feb. 9, 2023

When it comes to NASA, most people look to the skies as rockets, rovers, and astronauts push the boundaries of space exploration. But the benefits of going above and beyond can be found here on Earth through products and services born from NASA innovation.

The latest edition of NASA’s Spinoff publication features dozens of new commercialized technologies from companies that are benefiting people around the globe even in the classroom.
Virtual Workshops and Learning Opportunities
Audience: Educators, parents, caregivers, and students in high school and college
Event Date: Tuesday, Feb. 14 at
5 p.m. EST

Join the Lunar and Planetary Institute for the new “Alcanzando las Estrellas” series of webinars presented in Spanish. Spanish-speaking students, educators, and community members are invited to this free, virtual webinar series to learn more about the exciting field of planetary science. Tune in this month to hear from Dr. Germán Martínez who will share highlights from his time working on NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, including how to drive a rover on another planet. Click here to learn more.
Audience: All educators; students in grades 9-12 and higher education
Event Date: Thursday, Feb. 16 at
10 p.m. EST

During its time on Mars, the Perseverance rover has changed the way we look at the Red Planet. The rover is investigating Jezero Crater – a region of Mars where the ancient environment may have been favorable for microbial life – probing the Martian rocks for evidence of past life. The rover is also collecting and preparing Martian rocks and sediment samples and depositing them on the Martian surface for retrieval by a future mission. Join members of the Mars 2020 mission as they discuss the past two years of operation and discovery.
Sally Ride EarthKAM is a free STEM educational program managed by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. EarthKAM allows students in grades K-12 to take images of Earth from space using a camera aboard the International Space Station. Use EarthKAM as a teaching tool to study subjects ranging from geography to art to meteorology.

The next mission takes place Tuesday, Feb. 14 - Friday, Feb. 17. Visit the website for details and to register to participate.

NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate is seeking proposals for Lunar Surface Technology Research (LuSTR) opportunities.

LuSTR solicits ideas from universities for the creation of lunar surface technologies to accelerate the infusion of new technologies into NASA missions, including Artemis. This initiative aligns with the six focus areas of NASA’s Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative.

This LuSTR solicitation features specific challenges in three focus areas: Dust Mitigation, Extreme Access, and In-Situ Resource Utilization.
Audience: Universities, colleges, and community colleges designated as Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs)
Virtual Information Sessions: Thursday, Feb. 16 and April 6
Proposal Deadline: May 1

NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) is seeking proposals to strengthen the research capacity of MSIs and enable students to pursue research in areas of priority to NASA.

The MUREP Curriculum Awards opportunity seeks to engage diverse students in authentic learning experiences through curriculum improvement and development, and culturally relevant and responsive teaching, learning, and support. Full proposal and virtual information session details can be found here.
Is your community ready for the upcoming solar eclipses in 2023 and 2024? Become a NASA Partner Eclipse Ambassador to share your space science enthusiasm with others in your area. Ambassadors will help prepare communities across the U.S. to experience the awe of our place in space. Participants will receive training and materials to engage underserved audiences in their area.

Applications from amateur astronomers and undergraduate students will be accepted until 500 partnerships have been made across the U.S.
