James Webb Space Telescope spots planet shrouded in weird sand-filled clouds
(NASA/JPL-Caltech)
The James Webb Space Telescope has found a strange alien world shrouded in clouds of sand-like silicate grains.

The exoplanet discovery, described in a new paper as the first detection of its kind, was made by the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRSpec and MIRI instruments. In the data, astronomers spotted evidence of silicate-rich clouds around a brown dwarf nearly 20 times the size of Jupiter. The finding confirms some earlier theories about these odd planet-like worlds.

Saturn and a bright moon share the sky tonight!
(Starry Night Software)
he bright moon passes by Saturn tonight, coinciding with the moon's closest approach to Earth.

Currently in a waxing gibbous phase, the moon will appear near Saturn on the evenings of September 7th and 8th. However, while Saturn currently shines brightly at a +0.4 magnitude, the moon's glow may make it difficult to spot the ringed planet — especially as the moon reaches perigee.

NASA to replace seal on leaky Artemis 1 moon rocket at the launch pad
(Joe Raedle/Getty Images)
NASA's Artemis 1 moon rocket is staying at the launch pad, at least for now.

Artemis 1 will use NASA's new Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket to send an uncrewed Orion capsule to lunar orbit and back. NASA attempted to launch the epic mission on Saturday (Sept. 3) but stood down when it couldn't troubleshoot a leak of supercold liquid hydrogen (LH2) propellant in time for liftoff.
