In the News In recent months, monkeypox has been all over the news. The first major global outbreak of this once rare viral disease began in May. Since then, more than 50,000 cases have been reported worldwide — with more than 20,000 of those in the United States alone. Kids and teens have low risk of catching this illness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But students may still have questions about the virus, how it spreads and how to avoid catching it.  To help answer those questions, Science News Explores has published an explainer on monkeypox, as well as a story on how the virus can spread through animals.
