NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Sept. 22, 2022

In meteorology, Sept. 1 is considered the first day of the fall season. But today's autumnal equinox officially marks the start of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Make a classroom connection to this special spot in Earth's yearly trip around the Sun with these STEM resources.
On Monday, Sept. 26 at 7:14 p.m. EDTNASA’s DART mission will intentionally crash into Dimorphos, the asteroid moonlet of Didymos. While the asteroid poses no threat to Earth, this is the world’s first test using a spacecraft to deflect an asteroid for planetary defense.

Live coverage of the event begins at 6 p.m. EDT on NASA TV.
Do you know how many asteroids have been identified in our solar system? Click here to find out. Then learn how to tell the difference between asteroids, comets, meteors, meteorites and other bodies in our solar system.
Take a short quiz on asteroids, the DART mission, and planetary defense to earn a #PlanetaryDefender badge and certificate you can download, print, and share on social media.
Audience: Educators, parents, caregivers, and students in high school and college
Event Date: Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. EDT

The Lunar and Planetary Institute is hosting a live, in-person event in conjunction with the impact of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos. Dr. Edgard Rivera-Valentín will provide a DART mission overview and live commentary as the DART spacecraft approaches and impacts the asteroid. Dr. Rivera-Valentín is a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. The event will be streamed live through the LPI YouTube channel.

This yearlong internship opportunity allows graduate student research assistants to work with NASA scientists and lead research teams in a NASA research project related to climate change. This opportunity will not conflict with coursework and class schedules during the fall and spring. The internship is considered a part-time position that supports each graduate student’s major area of study.
Audience: Full-time STEM educators of grades 9-12 who are U.S. citizens
Application Deadline: Sept. 30

This yearlong STEM engagement opportunity allows high school STEM educators to work with NASA scientists, lead research teams, and develop STEM curricula for their current classes.

Educators participating in this opportunity will become associate researchers who integrate NASA education resources and content into their classrooms while improving STEM education within their communities.
