In this talk, Lord Martin Rees will argue that the decisions we must make on how science is applied belong outside the lab and should be the outcome of wide public debate. Lord Rees believes that we need to think globally, we need to think rationally and we need to think long-term, empowered by twenty-first-century technology but guided by values that science alone cannot provide. TALKS PROGRAMME THE FUTURE OF UK SCIENCE AND INNOVATION Patrick Vallance, Government Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance took on the role of Government Chief Scientific Adviser in 2018 and rose to household name status with his regular appearances on TV, as he guided the government through the most severe global pandemic in generations. Join Sir Patrick as he outlines the case for why science in government matters, his role during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lessons British science can take forward. TALKS PROGRAMME AN OCEAN OF SALT Helen Czerski, Associate Professor, University College London  Earth's ocean is an engine that acts as the beating heart of the Earth system. In this talk Helen Czerski will explore the great stories of our ocean told through salt: where vast supply of ocean salt came from, why it makes sea turtles cry, how it shaped polar exploration, how it helps turn the ocean engine, why it matters for the planet and why an eel's metamorphosis is one of the greatest tricks in nature. TALKS PROGRAMME THE GEOLOGICAL RECORD OF CLIMATE CHANGE Christopher Jackson, Director of Sustainable Geoscience, Jacobs The Earth is warming, with present and future changes in our climate being of global concern. However, it is important to understand that since its formation of approximately 4.6 billion years ago, the Earth's climate has varied significantly.  In this talk Chris Jackson will look at the geological record of climate change, how these changes impacted life on Earth, and how this can help us better understand our present and future climate.
