PICTURE OF THE DAY

Paolo Palma from Naples, Italy

This striking mosaic contains an image of every star of magnitude 5 or brighter visible from Naples, Italy, where the imager is based. Every photo — about 1,250 of them — was taken on a smartphone through a defocused telescope, resulting in the doughnut-shaped image. By defocusing the image, the photographer emphasizes the variety of stellar colors, ranging from white-hot carbon-burning stars to the cool, crimson hues of aging red giants.
