Coming Soon The International Day of People with Disabilities is coming up on December 3. This annual event celebrates people living with disabilities and promotes public awareness about their experiences. If you’re a parent or educator helping students learn about people with disabilities, Science News for Students has a few stories to get you started. We’ve profiled several scientists with disabilities. Kids may be familiar with STEM titans like Stephen Hawking, the famed physicist who had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. But more than half a million people in STEM in the United States alone have some form of disability. Meet a blind astronomer who studies the stars using sound and a wheelchair-bound biologist who studies tardigrades living in treetops.  Science News for Students also covers new technologies that may help people overcome physical and mental challenges. New devices could allow people with paralyzed legs to pedal bicycles, or folks with hand injuries to better grip objects.
