NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Aug. 26, 2021

In honor of Women's Equality Day, join NASA for a Q&A session on LinkedIn with NASA Women in STEM on Aug. 26 from 4-5 p.m. EDT.
At NASA, we're committed to making air, space, science and technology available for everyone because we know we're stronger and better together.

On June 15, NASA launched Mission Equity, a comprehensive effort to assess expansion and modification of agency programs, procurements, grants and policies to examine potential barriers and challenges for communities that are historically underrepresented and underserved.

Don’t miss your chance to join the dialogue. Share your ideas and feedback, including those related to diversity and equal opportunity in the STEM community, before Aug. 31.
Register to be NASA’s virtual guest for the launch of the 23rd SpaceX Cargo Resupply Mission.

Scheduled to launch on Aug. 28, the spacecraft will deliver a variety of NASA science investigations, including studies on bone density and vision disorders, and a new robotic arm demonstration that could reveal potential uses on Earth. Participants will receive schedule updates and access to related activities and resources (including a virtual passport stamp for email registrants).
Audience: Graduate Students Who Are U.S. Citizens
Application Deadline: Aug. 29

During this yearlong internship, graduate students work with NASA scientists and lead research teams in a NASA research project related to climate change. This opportunity will not conflict with the students’ coursework and class schedules during the fall and spring. The internship is considered a part-time position that supports each graduate student’s major area of study.
Audience: Full-time 9-12 STEM Educators Who Are U.S. Citizens
Application Deadline: Aug. 29

This yearlong STEM engagement opportunity allows high school STEM educators to work with NASA scientists, lead research teams and develop STEM curricula for their current classes. Participants will become associate researchers who integrate NASA education resources and content into their classrooms while improving STEM education within their communities.
Due to impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fall session will be conducted remotely. Spring and summer session locality requirements will be determined in accordance with the NASA Emergency Response Framework prior to the onset of each subsequent term.

“NASA STEM Stars” is a webchat series that connects students with subject matter experts to learn about STEM careers and ask questions about STEM topics. Next week, mechatronics engineer Tim Szwarc will discuss how NASA designed the rock drill and sampling devices being used by the Perseverance rover on Mars.

Watch the live event and ask your questions about pursuing careers in STEM.
Share Your Creativity
Audience: Educators, Parents, Caregivers and Students

For almost 50 years, Landsat satellites have collected images of Earth from space, representing the longest continuous space-based record of our planet’s surface. In September, Landsat 9 is scheduled to launch and continue this legacy. In honor of the launch, we invite you to get creative and show us what Landsat means to you. Create art or make a craft that’s inspired by a favorite Landsat image or the satellite itself, and share it with us on social media.
Audience: University and College Students, Musicians and Composers of All Ages

Are you a musician — composer, performer, music educator or student — inspired by exploration and discovery? Share your inspiration in your unique voice, and join with others to create the Lucy Soundscape, a public collection of original music inspired by NASA’s Lucy mission launching in 2021.
Opportunities With Our Partners
Audience: Students and Faculty at Degree-seeking Institutions
Application Deadline: Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. EDT

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient, innovative, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy. Teams can choose:
Design Challenge: Create new or retrofit residential and commercial building designs.
Build Challenge: Locally design, build and operate fully functional houses.
The challenges culminate in a Solar Decathlon Competition Event at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. Design Challenge finalists will present their entries in April 2022, and Build Challenge finalists will present in April 2023. Remote and virtual participation opportunities are available.
