NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Dec. 8, 2022

On Sunday, Dec. 11, the Orion capsule is set to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California. After traveling more than 1.3 million miles in 25 days, the record-breaking Artemis I mission sets the stage for returning astronauts to the Moon.

Live coverage begins at 11 a.m. EST and splashdown is expected at 12:40 p.m. EST.

As we wait for reentry and splashdown, make a STEM connection with these activities and resources.

Audience: Informal educators

The MIE Alliance has been helping educators at informal education organizations such as museums, science centers, planetariums, parks, libraries, and camps bring NASA to their audiences for more than two decades. Now, the Alliance has a new home!

Current MIE Alliance members are reminded to join CONNECTS to continue participating; new members are invited as well!
Do you know a student who’s got perseverance? A student who’s shown nothing can get in the way of their educational goals?

NASA’s “You’ve Got Perseverance!” award opportunity invites U.S. teachers, educators, and community members to nominate students in grades 6-12 who have demonstrated that they have the right stuff to move past obstacles and reach their academic goals. Awardees will get a message directly from Mars and a chance to talk to the rover team.

Nominations are due Monday, Dec. 19, with additional opportunities to follow.
Are You Up for a Challenge?
Audience: Students in grades K-12
Entry Deadline: Jan. 17, 2023

Educators and students, are you looking for a challenge to do over the holidays? Look no further and join the Power to Explore Student Challenge.

The Power to Explore Student Challenge invites K-12 students to dream up a new space mission powered by a Radioisotope Power System (RPS). The challenge is open to individual students attending U.S. public, private, charter, or home schools – including those in U.S. territories and schools operated by the U.S. for American personnel overseas. Forty-five semifinalists will receive an RPS prize pack, nine finalists will receive a virtual session with a NASA expert, and three winners will be awarded a trip for two to NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Ohio.
Audience: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) in the U.S.
Proposal Deadline: Jan. 17, 2023,
5 p.m. EST

The NASA Office of STEM Engagement Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) is soliciting proposals from HBCUs and PBIs to establish Precollege Summer Institutes (PSI). This innovative summer residential experience will increase participation and retention of historically underserved and underrepresented high school students in STEM areas and prepare them for success in college STEM degree programs and STEM careers. Full proposal details can be found here.
Audience: Postdoctoral researchers
Proposal Deadline: Jan. 26, 2023

The Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor College of Medicine is soliciting proposals from postdoctoral researchers to help solve the health challenges of human deep space exploration. TRISH’s postdoctoral fellowship program supports early career scientists pursuing research with the potential to reduce the health risks associated with spaceflight and improve performance. Applicants must submit research proposals with an identified mentor and institution.

Potential mentors seeking a postdoctoral fellow may notify TRISH via email.
