Thomas Christian from San Antonio, Texas This image shows the shockwave of Cygnus X-1, a black hole eating the supergiant star HDE 226868. As it does so, it forms a jet that emanates out of the black hole’s accretion disc. At the center of the image is the Tulip Nebula, and just to its right is a bow-shaped structure that is the shockwave from Cygnus X-1. It lies approximately 7,000 light-years away. |
