NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Sept. 5 2024

Connect With NASA Experts Via NASA Engages

Would you like to have a NASA expert speak to your students? The NASA Engages program makes connecting with NASA easier than ever before. Create an online profile and request an expert to take part in your career fairs, demonstrations, expert panels, science fairs, competitions, and more.

Virtual appearances are available nationwide, but in-person events are only available within a 35-mile radius to a NASA center. Make your request at least two months in advance, and the NASA Engages team will find the right expert for your audience. Click here to get started.

Higher Education Opportunities

Student Suborbital Flight Opportunities: NASA RockSat Program

Audience: University and community college undergraduate students and faculty

Notice of Intent to Fly Deadline: Thursday, Sept. 19

Contact:

wff-rocksatprogram@mail.nasa.gov

NASA’s RockSat program gives U.S. college and university teams low-cost access to space via payload capabilities on sounding rockets that reach an altitude of more than 70 miles. RockSat engages students in a thorough design process documented by design reviews in the fall and testing and integration reviews in the spring. This is a competitive program and space on the rocket is limited.

Visit the RockSat program website to find the 2025 program handbooks and instructions to submit a Notice of Intent to Fly form.

DEVELOP National Program Opportunities

Application Deadline: Friday, Oct. 4

Contact:

NASA-DL-DEVELOP@mail.nasa.gov

DEVELOP provides 10-week research opportunities for participants to address environmental and public policy issues through interdisciplinary research projects that apply the lens of NASA Earth observations to community concerns around the globe. Working in teams and with the support of science advisors and mentors, DEVELOP participants build research and science communication skills that help them succeed in the workforce.

DEVELOP offers both in-person and virtual opportunities depending on the project. Click here to browse the proposed project list.

Call for Payloads: 2025 High-Altitude Student Platform

Audience: Student teams from universities and community colleges worldwide

Notice of Intent Deadline:

Friday, Oct. 11

Application Deadline: Monday, Nov. 4

Contact: hasp@lsu.edu

Student teams are invited to develop experiments to fly to the edge of space on a NASA high-altitude research balloon. The annual project, supported by the NASA Science Mission Directorate Astrophysics Division, NASA Balloon Program Office, and the Louisiana Space Grant Consortium, provides near-space access for up to 24 student experiments. Typically, the flights last 15 to 20 hours and reach an altitude of 122,000 feet. There is no cost for launch and flight operations. Student teams must raise funds to support payload development and travel.

Click here to register for a Q&A teleconference on Friday, Sept. 27, and an Application Development teleconference on Friday, Oct. 18.
