NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Oct. 13, 2022

Celebrate the intricate link between trees and climate by taking part in the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program’s 2022 Trees Challenge.

Between Oct. 11 and Nov. 11, citizen scientists worldwide are invited to submit tree height observations and tree circumference measurements. Your participation will help researchers estimate the number of trees in your area and contribute meaningful data to climate science research.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, this science education project and its curricular and comic book resources are available for use in your mosquito outreach. Workshop Dates: Oct. 17-21

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is hosting a virtual workshop about the SMD Bridge Program which seeks to increase engagement and partnering between NASA and faculty and students at minority serving institutions, primarily undergraduate institutions and community colleges.

Attendees will explore topics including mentoring and early career perspectives as you learn about the goals of the program and ways to participate. Registration is open now. 
Audience: Educator-led student groups (grades 5-10), formal and informal educators, and college students
Webinar Date: Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. EDT
 
Join Dr. Paul Abell, scientist with the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science team and DART team member, for a brief review/overview of NASA’s DART mission – the world’s first planetary defense test mission. Tune in to hear updates and preliminary results from DART’s Sept. 26 impact into Dimorphos, a moonlet of asteroid Didymos. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by an optional Q&A session. Click here to register.

Event Date: Oct. 20 at 4:20 p.m. EDT
 
Join NASA, in collaboration with the Million Girls Moonshot and the Afterschool Alliance, for a virtual event featuring a pre-recorded International Space Station interaction between astronaut Jessica Watkins and actress Keke Palmer. Following the interaction, students can ask questions during a live panel discussion with NASA scientists and engineers.

Proposal Support Q&A Session:

The NASA TechRise Student Challenge invites student teams to submit science and technology experiment ideas to fly on a high-altitude balloon. Students attending U.S. public, private, or charter schools – including those in U.S. territories – are challenged to design an experiment under the guidance of an educator. A total of 60 winning teams will be selected and awarded $1,500 to build their experiment. Each team will be assigned a spot on a high-altitude balloon flight and receive technical support from Future Engineers.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center’s Exploration Station offers free workshops for formal and informal K-12 student groups and youth-serving organizations. Registration is open for the 2022-2023 school year. Register here for a hands-on activity workshop facilitated by NASA STEM engagement specialists. Participation includes free admission to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
