The terms 'northern lights', 'space weather' and 'geomagnetic storm' were googled more in May 2024 than in any other month in the search engine's history. With April's total solar eclipse, and Mid-May's widespread aurora show, public interest in the sun has been much higher than usual. As photos and discussions of the eclipse and northern lights flooded social media and secured segments on prime-time news broadcasts, Google search inquiries for these topics shot up significantly.

Space shuttle fliers join Astronaut Hall of Fame

This year's U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame induction ceremony was also a reunion of sorts, as the two honorees took to the stage under the spacecraft on which they once crossed paths. NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida hosted the ceremony under its display of the retired space shuttle Atlantis on Saturday (June 1). A full house of former astronauts, space program officials and the public were there to see David Hilmers and Marsha Ivins be added to the hall's ranks.

When Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa canceled his planned flight around the moon on due to delays with SpaceX's Starship megarocket, the eight people he picked to fly with him were understandably surprised.

James Webb Telescope makes carbon-rich exoplanets discovery

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered the richest "menu" of hydrocarbons ever seen in a planet-forming disk. This observation, which involved the protoplanetary disk around a tiny star, also revealed the first detection of ethane outside the solar system.

"This is profoundly different from the composition we see in disks around solar-type stars."
