The Japanese company ispace announced on Tuesday night (Dec. 17) that its second-ever moon mission will launch on the same Falcon 9 rocket that will loft Blue Ghost, a lunar lander built by Texas-based Firefly Aerospace. (wenbin via Getty Images) The Ursid meteor shower is active between Dec. 17-26 and will next peak overnight on Dec. 22-23, 2024. They're generally a fairly sparse display, producing approximately five meteors per hour, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. The Ursids are associated with Comet 8P/Tuttle, a periodic comet that follows a 13.5-year elliptical orbit around the sun. Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong, part of China's three-person Shenzhou 19 mission, spent more than nine hours spacewalking outside the Tiangong space station from late Monday night (Dec. 16) through Tuesday morning (Dec. 17), according to officials with China's Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO). Full Story: Space (12/18)  Science & Astronomy JWST catches monster black hole napping after 'overeating' (Jiarong Gu) Napping after overfeeding on food is a dilemma many of us will be fortunate to face on Christmas Day. New research has shown that, billions of years ago, some early black holes also had to nap after overindulging. Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers spotted a dormant supermassive black hole that existed just 800 million years after the Big Bang. This cosmic monster passed out after a particularly large meal of galactic gas and dust. Full Story: Space (12/18)  Technology Private Japanese rocket explodes after liftoff (STR/JIJI PRESS/AFP via Getty Images) Japanese startup Space One lost another rocket today (Dec. 18) when its Kairos 2 launch vehicle failed shortly after liftoff. Space One was aiming to be the first private Japanese company to put a satellite into orbit with the Kairos 2 rocket, but it was not to be. After taking off around 11 a.m. local time today from Space Port Kii in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, the 59-foot-tall (18 meters) rocket began tumbling. Full Story: Space (12/18)  Search for Life TRAPPIST-1b may have carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere (Thomas Müller (HdA/MPIA)) The innermost Earth-like planet in the famous TRAPPIST-1 system might be capable of supporting a thick atmosphere after all, according to new research. Since the system of seven tightly-packed, Earth-sized worlds was discovered in 2017, huddled in remarkable harmony just 40 light-years from Earth, astronomers have tried to determine whether any support atmosphere, which is critical to harbor life as we know it.
