NASA EXPRESS -- Your STEM Connection for Oct. 24, 2024

NASA STEM Engagement

Celebrate Halloween With NASA

Carve a pumpkin like a NASA engineer, use Halloween candy for hands-on learning, and discover mysterious locations throughout the solar system and beyond.

Put on your geologist hat and use Halloween candy for a fun and tasty Candy Bar Geology activity.

Take your pumpkin-carving creativity into orbit with NASA-themed templates and stencils.

Decorate your space with downloadable Galaxy of Horrors posters, if you dare!

Test your knowledge of strange and mysterious objects in the universe with the Kahoot! NASA Quiz of Cosmic Frights.

Visit the Universe of Monsters to see which exoplanets share traits with ghastly ghouls.

Journey through the Sinister Solar System to explore mysterious sights and spine-tingling sounds.

New STEMonstration and Classroom Connection:

Earth Science – Remote Sensing

maxresdefault image

From low Earth orbit, the International Space Station has a unique vantage point to capture critical Earth science data and imagery. In the latest STEMonstration episode, NASA astronaut Michael Barratt explores remote sensors installed on the exterior of the space station and how they help to increase our understanding of atmospheric and oceanic processes on Earth.

Watch the video, then check out the classroom connection to challenge students to build and experiment with their own remote sensor.

Virtual Learning Opportunities

GLOBE Webinars: Discover, Explore, Explain!

Audience: Formal and informal educators, parents, and caregivers

Contact: cassie_soeffing@strategies.org

Join the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program for a pair of webinars to discover resources to support your GLOBE students’ research during the 2024-2025 school year and prepare students to enter the 2025 GLOBE International Virtual Science Symposium. These engaging, interactive webinars will feature presenters sharing their research, the type of GLOBE data it generates, and examples of research questions your students can explore using this data.

Make plans to join one or both sessions.

Click here to register for the webinar on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. EDT, featuring presenters from the GLOBE Urban Heat Island, Trees, and Clouds project teams, as well as the GLOBE Phenology (with Alaska examples) and MyNASA Data teams.

Click here to register for the webinar on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. EDT, featuring presenters from the GLOBE Mission Mosquito, Land Cover, and Trees project teams, as well as the MyNASA Data, NASA SnowEx, and GLOBE teams.

Take Part in NASA Science

Help Scientists Search for Asteroids Around Dead Stars

Audience: Science enthusiasts of all ages

Do you ever wonder what the future holds for our solar system? The Sun will eventually become a dense, planet-sized object called a white dwarf. That means studying white dwarfs we see in the sky can provide a glimpse into our own solar system’s fate.

The new Exoasteroids participatory science project lets you help scientists discover debris disks and asteroids around white dwarfs using images taken by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope. This data can provide clues into the formation and composition of other planetary systems in the universe.
